Chelsea, 7 May, 1857—

Dear Neuberg,—I have got both your Papers, the second this afternoon: many thanks for the trouble you take;—I am in hopes to be out of the thrice and four times accursed element now before very long!— But I am still in it,—woe's me.

The “Company of poor men” is in Speech V, p. 171 vol iii (of the Edition you have just got).1

You judge rightly of the sad news that have come suddenly upon me. I have had no such blow for a long while;2—coming upon me in this delirious disgusting element, too, whh I must not quit under pain of worse:3 Ah me, ah me!—

Yours always truly /

T. Carlyle
