TC TO MR CHAMBERS
Chelsea, 23 May, 1857—
What puts “offending me” into your head? You are very far from having offended me; you have only to let matters stand as they are! As the Book was delivered by a private messenger, I concluded you knew it was safe: every minute of my time is occupied; and I write no Notes (tho’ it wd often be agreeable to write such) that can possibly be avoided.
I will keep the Book, since you have persisted in sending it; I shall not need it for an admonition to wish you right well, tho’ it surely may serve in that capacity among others.
With many thanks and good wishes I remain always
Yours sincerely /
T. Carlyle
