Chelsea, 7 june, 1857—

Dear Sir,

I am sorry to stand in the way of any real or imaginary resource of yours, or to do what you will count a harsh thing. But it is impossible for me to give the least countenance to your undertaking the Mémoires du Wilhelmine;1 which Book is already translated as well as you could hope to do it; and for annotating, rectifying and elucidating which, you appear to me to be (rather eminently) destitute of the indispensable qualifications.

In the direction of the Museum Clerkship, or in any other feasible one, I would gladly help; but in this, or the like of this, pray excuse me altogether

Yours sincerely / T. Carlyle 2
