TC TO RICHARD MONCKTON MILNES
Chelsea, 15 june, 1857—
Dear Milnes,
I meant to have written yesterday, asking you to ride with me to poor Douglas Jerrold's Funeral;—I did in fact: but somebody came in at the wrong moment, and rendered it impossible; so I missed that pious duty at Norwood today (not having heart for it by myself),—and you, I hope, did it?1 It really was a kind of duty: A poor Brother mortal, and died an honest man (I do believe), laying down his pen, and taking his departure from among us!—
Truly, my friend, I am, outwardly and inwardly, much fitter for Funerals than for Dinners at this time! I feel all your goodness, and do not mean to forget it; but such is the sad fact.— You need not ask Lord Ashburton; he is down with gout, and Cannot come: I had just seen him, and refused his invitation, about two hours before yours arrived!—
Pity and pray for me / Yours ever truly / T. Carlyle
