TC TO [EDWARD CHAPMAN]

Chelsea, 7 july, 1857—

Sir,

The Book on Frederick, as I thought I had explained, will consist, when complete, of at least Four volumes (not Five, if we can help it):1 the Portion that is coming out next summer will be of Two volumes, more likely than of Three (as I find on consulting with the Printer); but it is probable the Volumes will be bigger than I gave you to expect. Two Voll. published next summer (if all go well);2 then, at some subsequent period, Two more: that is to say, Four Volumes in whole, will be the Life of Frk, so far as present calculations go.

I remain / Yours truly

T. Carlyle
