Auchertool / Thursday [6 August 1857]

This isn't a letter, Dear;—only a line to keep you from wondering. I hope to write at reasonably good length tomorrow. Today—“Oh Doctor I am sick, sick, sick”!1 The fact is I am in the valley of the shadow2 of Bluepill and Castoroil! and like the Kircaldy Minister,3 “I have a dreadful gripe,” besides no end of nausea—

It was become necessary to try something; my nights were so bad and my days ditto.

I hoped to have got a letter from you this morning but nothing at all for me today—

I have hoped always I should get my head up before post time—but here it is now, and this is as much as I am up to— Heaven help me!

Yours affly / Jane W Carlyle
