Chelsea, 1 Octr, 1858—

Dear Sir,

I understand Mr Jones1 of our London Library, to whose merits I have borne testimony on occasion,2 is now a Candidate for the Librarianship in Manchester. If you are interested in that affair, allow me to recommend Mr Jones specially to your attention, as a man of real worth in his department and otherwise: affable, obliging, yet I think accurate and methodic; possessed by this time of such a knowledge of Books as is very rare in this Country;—in short a man altogether likely for such an office.

Believe me / Yours always truly / T. Carlyle
