TC TO LADY CHATTERTON

Chelsea, 6 feby, 1859—

Dear Madam,

I very well remember your goodness to me; I have to thank you again for a pretty Book,1—which I believe will do good to all that read in it: a thing one cannot say of many Books now going. My vote is you have made a clearly superior use of your leisure hours in doing such a work, and you have done it well, whh was not quite easy either.

I beg to return you many thanks and respects and good wishes; and am sincerely

1. Lady Chatterton had presumably sent Extracts from the Works of Jean Paul F. Richter, selected and trans. Georgiana, Lady Chatterton (1859); its publication was announced in the Examiner, 22 Jan. TC wrote to Lady Chatterton, 23 Aug. 1845, in answer to her queries about translating Richter: “If I might venture to advise, your profitablest plan would be to learn German, and read Richter and others for yourself. Which were a far easier attainment than perhaps you apprehend” (MS: Shakespeare Birthplace Trust; hitherto unpbd.). TC sent the letter to JWC, 23 Aug. 1845, referring to Lady Chatterton as “a young writing lady, does Irish Tales I think, or some such rubbish”; see TC to JWC, 23 Aug. 1845.
