JWC TO GOETHE
[10 June 1828]
Respected Sir
The Bearer of this is Mr May, a Merchant of Glasgow,1 and my esteemed acquaintance; who in passing thro' Weimar wishes, as he says himself, to see with his own eyes “the first man of the age,” I embrace the opportunity of sending you by him, in my own and my Husband's name, the continued assurance of our affection and grateful regard; and am ever, with the truest sentiments,
Your Scholar and Admirer,
Jane W. Carlyle.
